MIT students associated with the university’s D-Lab and experienced with human-powered machine development have formed Global Cycle Solutions. This organization focuses on improving and bringing novel, small-scale technology to developing countries. One of its most innovative designs is the mobile maize sheller.

The mobile maize sheller allows a pedaler to operate a corn sheller using a chain connected to the rear cogset when the bike is stationary. After shelling, the drive can be disengaged and the bike used for transportation. That way, several farmers can share the same human-powered device. Other Global Cycle Solutions inventions include a pedal-powered drill and charcoal briquetter.
